ICF defines “coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential, which is particularly important in today’s uncertain and complex environment”.
Coaching is a tool to attain personal and professional development, but it is mainly a western concept. The models schools teach students might not work across all cultures. While in the USA the coach-client relation is based on partnership, in Asia the coach is regarded as an “elder” and as such the client will “look up” to the coach, in both cases the relationship will shape the coaching session dynamics.
