Societies tend to believe that we need to avoid bad habits like drinking, partying too much… but did you know that shameful vices have shaped civilizations? Yes, vices such as the need to drink, having sex or smoking are fundamental elements for creating societies, groups and even civilizations….The need for people to share and be with others alike is inherent to humans. Drinking, drugs, partying are as important as dancing, sharing songs, storytelling. The getting together with others created the need to create a different social and economic structure where people could share, learn as well as work and worship together. This fact is another prove that Culture Matters!
The wheel, knives, steel might have transformed us from hunter-gatherers into modern man, but booze, sex, trash talk, and tripping built our civilization….
I want to invite you to read Robert Evans’ last book: A (brief) History of Vice, where Mr. Evans takes a great shot at explaining how civilizations have been formed by telling different stories where he argues that impulses can be destructive but they also supports us to learn how to cope with stress, desires, needs.
